Our Teaching Philosophy:

Our teaching philosophy is to give each student a creative, healthy, and efficient way to use their voice and instrument. No matter the style, fostering a technique of complete vocal freedom and playing with easy musical communication is essential to our educational goals. Additionally, music education is not only about discipline and growth, but also about the growth of one's personhood. We take very seriously the need for compassionate education in an art form so vulnerable and personal.

An Overview of Our Current Offerings

Here’s what you can expect when you are apart of Bloch Performing Arts:

  • Private Lessons for Voice or Piano:

    • This is at the heart of what we do! Work one-on-one with any of our voice or piano teachers to begin building your skillset or improving upon what you already know!

    • In-person lessons in Lexington, MA are available as well as online if preferred

    • Access to a staff pianist for lessons, studio classes, and recitals

    • Mentorship to help guide you in your musical interests and pursuits

  • Studio Masterclasses:

    • The Studio Masterclass is a class of about 5-8 students that runs for 2 hours and includes performances by each student of a piece they are working on. The teaching artist will then give a 18 min public coaching session to each student, working through topics such as technique, posture, stage presence, stylistic/musical and textual interpretation, character and storytelling development, etc. The masterclass will be attended by participating performers, and is open to other BPA faculty, voice & piano students, and family, friends, and supporters who'd like to observe or audit the class.

    • Masterclasses are a wonderful opportunity for students to gain insights from new professional perspectives, practice performance skills in real time, make connections, and learn from observing their fellow singers. They are supportive and collaborative experiences in which the teacher, students, and audience members all play important roles. The aim of masterclasses is to stimulate inspiration and further motivation within the craft, or at the very least, provide food for thought.

  • Student Recitals:

    • We have two recital showcases per season, The Fall Into Music recital usually in November, and The Spring Serenade recital usually in May. Both recitals include all voice and piano students interested in showcasing their hard work for the season. We highly encourage all students to participate and work towards the performances to celebrate their talents.

  • Community Outreach Recitals:

    • We have two community outreach recitals per season where Bloch Performing Arts students are able to give back to the communities in Greater Boston. This includes our It's A Jolly Holiday performance in December and our A Little Bit In Love performance in February each season. All outreach recitals are free to participate and high school students can earn volunteer hours.

"My son started with Bloch Performing Arts over 5 years ago. He had an interest in singing and wanted to try to develop his voice although he was only 8 years old. Working with the studio, he has developed confidence, a wonderful singing voice and the ability to read music. He is now sought after to join plays and musicals during school and Summer Camp. We are really lucky to have found and been able to work with Bloch Performing Arts."

"Miss Jessica Bloch has been my daughter’s voice teacher for six years and has had an extraordinary impact on her life. She combines exceptional musical talent with endless patience, encouragement, and genuine care for her students. Miss Jessica has always believed in my daughter, supported her as a student with autism and ADHD, and helped her grow into a confident performer. Because of Miss Jessica, she has had incredible opportunities to study and perform in Europe twice, experiences that broadened her world and strengthened her confidence. The skills, discipline, and self-assurance she has gained extend far beyond music. As she begins pursuing a degree in music this fall, we know that Miss Jessica played an important role in helping her discover and pursue that passion. We cannot recommend Miss Jessica highly enough. Every student deserves a teacher like Miss Jessica."

"Our daughter has been singing with Akela since she was 5. Now at age 9, her skills have grown tremendously and we have seen her confidence grow in her commitment to music/theater, her dedication to practice, and her recognition of her abilities. Akela is a wonderful mentor and technical instructor and Bloch Performing Arts is an inclusive and caring community that ensures its students support one another at various stages of their musical journey. We have witnessed our daughter’s passion for singing soar in response to Akela’s kind and thoughtful guidance and support - it is truly a gift to be part of the BPA community!"
